Why Menopause Changes Your Skin: My Surgical Menopause Journey and What Every Woman Should Know

If you've recently noticed your skin becoming drier, thinner, more sensitive, or suddenly looking older than it did just months ago, you're not imagining it.

Whether you're experiencing perimenopause, natural menopause, or surgical menopause after a hysterectomy, hormonal changes can dramatically affect your skin. Unfortunately, many women are never told what to expect — or how to care for their skin during this transition.

As both a licensed esthetician and a woman who has experienced surgical menopause firsthand, I want to help change that conversation.

My Journey to Surgical Menopause

For years, I struggled with infertility, anxiety, PMDD, uterine fibroids, and chronic pelvic pain. Like many women, I tried nearly every treatment available. I worked closely with my primary care physician and OB/GYN, tried prescription medications, therapy, acupuncture, nutrition counseling, physical therapy, supplements, and numerous conservative treatment options — all in hopes of avoiding surgery.

Despite my best efforts, my condition continued to worsen.

I was hospitalized twice after my fibroids blocked my bladder, requiring emergency treatment. Eventually, I found a compassionate OB/GYN who listened, advocated for me, and helped me receive approval for the surgery that ultimately changed my life.

On October 1, 2025, I underwent a total hysterectomy after learning my uterus had enlarged to nearly the size of a softball because of fibroids.

The surgery relieved years of debilitating pain, and for that I will always be grateful.

What I wasn't prepared for was everything that happened afterward.

Almost overnight, I entered surgical menopause.

No one had fully prepared me for how quickly the hormonal changes would affect nearly every part of my body — including my skin.

What Is Surgical Menopause?

Unlike natural menopause, which usually occurs gradually over several years, surgical menopause happens immediately when the ovaries are removed during a hysterectomy.

Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone levels drop dramatically, creating rapid changes throughout the body.

Many women experience symptoms such as:

  • Hot flashes

  • Night sweats

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Mood changes, anxiety, or depression

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Weight changes

  • Hair thinning

  • Decreased libido

But one area that's often overlooked is the skin.

How Menopause Changes Your Skin

Hormones play an essential role in maintaining healthy, resilient skin.

Estrogen helps support collagen production, skin hydration, elasticity, wound healing, and your skin's protective barrier. As hormone levels decline, the skin begins to change from the inside out.

Some of the most common changes include:

Collagen Loss and Thinning Skin

Women can lose up to 30% of their collagen during the first five years after menopause. This contributes to thinner skin, increased wrinkles, and a loss of firmness.

Menopause Dry Skin and Dehydration

Lower estrogen reduces your skin's natural ability to retain moisture, often leaving it feeling tight, flaky, itchy, or irritated.

Reduced Elasticity and Loss of Firmness

As collagen and elastin decline, skin becomes less firm and more prone to sagging around the cheeks, jawline, neck, and eyes.

Slower Cell Turnover and Dullness

Skin doesn't renew itself as quickly, causing dullness, rough texture, and slower recovery after breakouts or procedures.

Increased Skin Sensitivity and Redness

Many women suddenly develop sensitivity to skincare products they've used for years. A weakened skin barrier can also make redness and inflammation more common.

Slower Healing

Cuts, irritation, and post-treatment recovery may take longer as the skin's natural repair processes slow with age and hormonal decline.

How to Care for Your Skin During Menopause

Although menopause changes your skin, it doesn't mean healthy, radiant skin is out of reach.

With the right combination of professional treatments, customized home care, healthy nutrition, stress management, strength training, quality sleep, and guidance from your healthcare providers, you can support your skin through every stage of menopause.

Professional Treatments That Support Menopausal Skin

Professional treatments such as customized facials, dermaplaning, microneedling, chemical peels, Jet Plasma, LED therapy, and targeted medical-grade skincare can all play an important role in improving hydration, supporting collagen production, strengthening the skin barrier, and restoring a healthier complexion.

Every woman's skin is different, which is why a personalized treatment plan is so important.

Why I Specialize in Menopause and Perimenopause Skincare

My passion for skincare actually began when I was 13 years old while struggling with acne.

That journey eventually led me to become a licensed esthetician, where I've had the privilege of helping clients improve concerns such as acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, psoriasis, and healthy aging.

Then menopause changed my own skin.

Experiencing surgical menopause gave me an entirely new perspective — not only as a skincare professional but as a woman navigating unexpected physical and emotional changes.

It reminded me how important education, compassion, and evidence-based skincare truly are.

Today, I'm expanding my education by becoming a Certified Menopause Coach so I can better support women through the skin changes that accompany perimenopause and menopause.

My mission is simple: to help women understand what's happening to their skin, feel confident in their changing bodies, and know they don't have to navigate this journey alone.
